Health Minister Orders Expansion of Govt IVF Services, Monthly Checks on Private Fertility Clinics
Telangana has 464 registered fertility clinics. Notices have gone to 60 clinics, licences of two have been cancelled and nine have been suspended. Rajanarsimha said every clinic must face inspection once a month.
Health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha has ordered the expansion of infertility services in government hospitals and monthly inspections of private fertility clinics. He asked officials to prepare proposals for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) units in district hospitals and to take strict action against clinics that violate rules, exploit patients or use unethical practices.
The directions came during a review meeting with health principal secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu, health commissioner Dr Sangitha Satyanarayana and members of the ART and Surrogacy State Supervisory Board.
Rajanarsimha said government gynaecologists should run a fertility out-patient clinic “at least one day every week” alongside maternal health duties. District hospitals will receive these services in phases, while officials will prepare plans based on the IVF units at Gandhi Hospital and Petlaburj Hospital.
Those two units, established in 2024, have treated nearly 37,300 patients. Officials said 23 women achieved confirmed pregnancies after IVF treatment, 510 patients underwent IUI procedures and IVF treatment is underway for 490 couples.
The minister also asked the department to conduct public awareness campaigns on infertility, timely treatment and available options.
Telangana has 464 registered fertility clinics. Notices have gone to 60 clinics, licences of two have been cancelled and nine have been suspended. Rajanarsimha said every clinic must face inspection once a month. Officials must check medicines, injections, manufacturers, MRP and procurement records, and act against clinics that fail to upload mandatory information. Referring to the Srishti Fertility Centre incident, he said such cases must “never be repeated”.
