The sudden sinking of a hand pump in Jangaon village, under the Ramagundam Municipal Corporation limits in Peddapalli district, triggered concern among residents on Friday evening.

The hand pump in the Indiranagar area reportedly sank while a woman was drawing water. Alarmed by the incident, she alerted other residents, who expressed concern over the possibility of further ground subsidence in the village.

Jangaon is a Singareni-affected village located above the GDK-1 incline coal mine operated by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) for the past 60 years.

Following the incident, SCCL deployed teams from its geology, survey and environment departments to investigate the cause.

On Saturday, Ramagundam mayor Mahankali Swamy and Singareni RG-1 Area General Manager D. Lalith Kumar visited the village and inspected the hand pump. They interacted with residents and assured them of support.

Swamy said the sinking might have occurred because of gaps that developed during the filling of sand in the coal mine.

SCCL had already deployed geology and survey teams to determine the cause of the incident, he said, assuring residents of assistance.

Lalith Kumar said such incidents could occur due to geological disturbances or soft soil layers. He said officials from the geology, survey and environment departments had been assigned to study the incident and establish its cause.

The general manager said residents had also brought several issues to his notice and assured them that these would be addressed. He added that plans for some works had already been prepared on the instructions of local MLA Makkan Singh Raj Thakur and that the works would begin soon.
