The production of Gudumba, illicitly-distilled liquor, is rampant in the interior areas of Manthani and Ramagiri mandals in the erstwhile Karimnagar district, with the illegal operators ramping up production in the run-up to the Dasara festival.

Prohibition and excise department police have intensified raids on Gudumba manufacturing units and destroyed prepared ID liquor and jaggery beverage in different places of old Karimnagar district.

On October 3, excise police carried out raids on a unit in the outskirts of Manthani and destroyed 2,000 liters of jaggery beverage. In Boinpet and Bokkalavagu in the outskirts of Manthani, 20 litres of Gudumba and 1200 litres of jaggery juice were destroyed on October 8.

In Jagtial, the hotspots are in Sarangapur and Birpur mandals. Excise police carried out raids on Gudumba production units in Rajanna-Sircilla district.

Excise department sources said that poor people, especially those who engage in hard work, would prefer to consume Gudumba since it was cheaper than that of Indian made foreign liquor.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, district prohibition and excise officer, Peddapalli, S. Srinivasa Murthy said that the activity of the department had been disturbed for two months due to transfer of officers and staff.

Moreover, the newly inducted sub-inspectors were in training. So, the vigilance of the department had weakened. Still, the department on getting information of illicit distillation of liquor had started raids and destroyed units and material, he said.

Some people are also manufacturing Gudumba for personal consumption as well as for villagers, Murthy said.
