GSI Scientists Investigating Three Blocks in Adilabad District for Limestone
There is a rush of private parties trying to start cement factories in the limestone rich district.

ADILABAD: The Telangana unit of Geological Survey of India (GSI), as part of its 2026-27 season, is conducting detailed field-level investigations to identify three best locations in Adilabad district from where limestone could be mined.
GSI officials say the move is part of their effort to gather baseline geosciences data in different places in Telangana towards establishment of cement factories in the private sector. The move assumes importance with the Adilabad unit of the Cement Corporation of India closed down long ago.
According to sources, GSI’s geologists posted in Telangana have conducted G3 stage field-level investigations for limestone at Lakshmipur and Pippalgaon blocks in Jainad mandal, and Tamsi block in the present Bheempur mandal carrying 56/5 and 56/10 topo sheet numbers in Adilabad district.
GSI officials have sought the cooperation of district administration for their field-level geoscientific investigations.
Villagers living in the identified blocks have confirmed that some scientists have visited their villages, interacted with them, and conducted preliminary investigations. It is said GSI staff will dig borewells to collect the samples to check whether or not there are sufficient deposits of limestone and establish their grade.
Amid this, there are concerns among farmers in whose areas surveys are being conducted. They point out that farmers had been forced to part with their valuable agricultural lands when the Adilabad unit of Cement Corporation of India (CCI)) had been established. But the unit had been closed after working for just 10 years. Started in 1984, it had provided employment to nearly 4,000 employees directly or indirectly. Its production halted in 1996 and the unit closed in 1998.
Vijjagiri Narayana, co-convenor of the CCI Sadhana Committee, said hundreds of local unemployed youth will get employment and the local economy get a boost if the closed Adilabad unit of CCI is revived.
Sources said private cement companies are eyeing the huge limestone reserves and valuable lands of the closed Adilabad unit. There are reports that Adani Ambuja Cement is showing interest in establishing a cement factory in Adilabad. A senior political leader said there are enough limestone reserves around Adilabad for cement factories for the next 100 years.
In the interim, privately owned Renuka Cements is said to be keen on quickly reviving its factory proposal at Ramai Rampur in Sathnala mandal of Adilabad district. Earlier, led by BJP senior leader Ch. Suhasini Reddy, Adivasi oustees had demanded that Renuka Cements allow them to cultivate their acquired lands since there has been a huge delay in establishing the factory. The oustees went on to approach the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes for the purpose.
Since then, management of the Renuka factory has sped up construction of the factory. It has also recruited some Adivasi for jobs.
