Godavari in Spate As Projects Release Water
Sriram Sagar Project gates lifted, 5.7 lakh cusecs released
Adilabad: The Godavari river is flowing in spate with heavy inflows from catchment areas and releases from Sriramsagar, Kadam and Swarna projects on Friday. At Basar, the river swelled further due to floodwaters from upstream Maharashtra.
Irrigation officials lifted 39 gates of the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) to discharge 5,71,217 cusecs downstream, against inflows of 4,50,000 cusecs.
Floodwater entered three lodges on the riverbank at Basar, where devotees were staying. Nirmal SP Janaki Sharmila reached the lodges in a tractor, interacted with the devotees and reassured them of their safety. Streams and rivulets across Adilabad are also in spate following incessant rains.
The Kadam project recorded an inflow of 26,448 cusecs, while 27,939 cusecs were discharged through four gates. The Gaddanna vagu project received 39,000 cusecs from Maharashtra rains, with five gates lifted to release water downstream.
The flood situation is still grim in the Nirmal district, with rain lashing at various places and floodwater inundating colonies in the low-lying areas. Floodwater entered the Vitaleshwara temple and hospital in Kubheer mandal, while floodwater affected the Jewla (K) and Jewla (B) and Kollur villages in Tanur mandal. Many low-lying areas are still flooded in Nirmal town.
Low-lying colonies were flooded in Bhainsa town. Floodwater entered Auto Nagar, Rohitnagar and Bharat Nagar in Bhainsa town and students of the minority hostel shifted to a safer place. Gaddanna vagu project received 39,000 cusecs of inflows following the heavy rains in the upstream in Maharashtra. Irrigation officials discharged the flood \water downstream from Gaddanna vagu by lifting the five gates. Godavari water touched the Pushkara ghats in Basar.
Flood water entered in graveyard, and Renuka Eellamma temple was also inundated by the flood water in Khanapur town. Flood water touched the bridge on Godavari near Kamalkot village in Mamada mandal in Nirmal.
In Adilabad district, the Penganga river received heavy inflows from upstream following the rains in Maharashtra, and officials did not allow heavy vehicles at the Taranam bridge due to the stream being high with floodwater in Jainad mandal. Irrigation officials discharged flood water downstream by lifting three gates from the Komaram Bheem project.
