Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to follow the footsteps of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and give a “muh tod jawab (befitting reply)” to Pakistan for the Pahalgam terror attacks, even if it meant cleaving Pakistan and merging PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) with India.
Revanth Reddy was speaking at a candlelight rally at a statue of Indira Gandhi alongside the Hussainsagar in the centre of the city. In attendance were senior party leaders, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and delegates to the Congress’ Bharat Summit that is currently on in Hyderabad.
Revanth Reddy recalled how Indira Gandhi had taken tough action against China during the 1967 war and Pakistan in 1971. Revanth Reddy said that the nation stood united behind the Centre and the time had come for the Prime Modi to take decisive action against Pakistan.
"It was the brave Indira Gandhi who divided Bangladesh from Pakistan. Recognising Indira Gandhi’s determination to save the country, BJP senior leader Atal Behari Vajpayee had called Indira Gandhi Goddess Durga,” Revanth Reddy said.
“You (PM Modi) remember Durga Mata. Take action, whether it's attacking Pakistan or any other measure. Today, steps should be taken against Pakistan. This is not the time for compromise.”
“140 crore Indians are ready to support the Centre. It is not time for politics and all should be united during the crisis,” Revanth Reddy said, and added that the state government stood in support of the Prime Minister. “It is high time that the Centre fights back and roots out terrorism.”
“Make Pakistan into two parts. Merge PoK with India. We will stand with you. You are a devotee of Durga Mata. Remember Indiraji,” Reddy added.
Revanth Reddy expressed anguish over the killing of 28 tourists in the brutal terrorist attack. He said that steps should be taken to ensure that such heinous incidents do not occur in the future.
On a call given by the Congress, the state government organised the candle light rally attended by delegates from more than 100 countries. Revanth Reddy extended condolences to the bereaved families and said the Telangana government was ready support them.
Thousands of people, including Congress MPs, party leaders, and foreign delegates who came to city to attend the Bharat Summit took part in a candlelight rally.
Participants shouted slogans like “Terrorism down down” and “Pakistan Murdabad”. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, ministers D. Sridhar Babu, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MPs Chamala Kiran Kumar, Mallu Ravi, and other Congress leaders took part.
The mood was sombre yet determined. People of all ages gathered in large numbers, showing their support by lighting candles and chanting for peace and justice. At the end of the rally, all lights around the Indira Gandhi statue were turned off, and the venue was lit by candlelight, as people silently paid their respects to the victims.
The protestors expressed their anger over how terrorism is trying to divide people. “It’s heartbreaking that innocent tourists were killed. If the terrorists want to fight, let them face the government, and not target harmless people,” said K. Swapna, a local who attended the rally.
Another attendee, K. Abhigna, added, “Killing in the name of religion is wrong. Terrorists should be punished strictly.” To ensure safety, around 500 police personnel were deployed throughout the Necklace Road stretch during the protest.
