GHSPCA: Chinese Manja Threatens Birds During Sankranti
A veterinary doctor associated with the organisation said birds injured by glass-coated thread often take weeks to recover, as the wounds severely affect their wings and ability to fly.
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) on Saturday provided a list of tips to help make flying kites safer for birds. GHSPCA officials said they have launched awareness drives across the city against the use of Chinese manja and glass-coated thread.
A veterinary doctor associated with the organisation said birds injured by glass-coated thread often take weeks to recover, as the wounds severely affect their wings and ability to fly. “Last year, over 150 birds were rescued, but nearly 50 per cent of them died during treatment due to the severity of injuries,” the doctor said.
Pointers to be aware to save birds
1. Stop using Chinese nylon manja and glass coated manja.
2. Try to fly kites in the afternoon, when bird movement is less.
3. Remove waste materials of kite, nylon manja, thread after celebrations.
4. Remove manja from trees and wires near homes.
5. Whereever you find bird entangled with manja or injured, don’t try to remove with a knife, scissors or blades. It may injure the bird more.
6. If you find a bird injured, call emergency contact of animal welfare organisations or if you are trying, first take the guidance from the animal activists.
7. Stop flying kites at night.
