Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon lose its newfound tag of being the country’s largest civic body, with the state government deciding to trifurcate into three municipal corporations — Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri.

“An official announcement could be made by the state government after the current GHMC Council’s term ends on February 10, 2026. There could be greater clarity on the issue during the Assembly session in January 2026,“ said an official from the state government.

The jurisdiction of the GHMC expanded to 2,053 square kilometres after the government merged 27 urban local bodies lying within or on the periphery of Outer Ring Road (ORR) with it. The expanded GHMC was reorganised into 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards. Compared to the mega civic body, the erstwhile GHMC was spread over 650 sq. km, with 30 circles and 150 wards.

The government appears to be considering two options — either Hyderabad getting 150 wards, and Cyberabad and Malkajgiri sharing 75 each, or Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri sharing 100 wards each.

If the government goes by the first option, Hyderabad Corporation will comprise the central and southern parts of the city, and it will extend up to Shamshabad in the south. Cyberabad will cover most of northwestern and northern parts of the city from Narsingi to Shamirpet, including its surrounding areas like Tellapur, Ameenpur, Serilingampally, among others. The eastern part of the city from Keesra to Pedda Amberpet is likely to be a part of the Malkajgiri Corporation.

“While freezing the boundaries of corporations, revenue sources like property tax collection and building permit fee, debts of the corporation will be taken into consideration,” said an official from the state government.

Recently, the government had appointed three additional commissioners to oversee the zonal commissioners. Earlier, the additional commissioners would exclusively take care of various wings of the corporation, such as sanitation, transport, etc. However, for the first time, the additional commissioners would oversee the works of the zonal commissioners.
