Gandipet Conduit Repairs Progressing at Brisk Pace
HMWS&SB says repairs to the century-old conduit will meet the deadline, with water tankers arranged for areas facing supply disruptions.
Repair works on the century-old stone masonry conduit carrying drinking water from Gandipet (Osmansagar) to the city are progressing at a brisk pace and would meet the deadline, the HMWS&SB said on Tuesday. The 36-hour shutdown, which began at 6 am on Tuesday, would continue until 6 pm on Wednesday, to repair leakages in the conduit at Sabza Colony, Toli Chowki and Manikonda. The 20 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity conduit is undergoing repairs to prevent further water loss.
HMWS&SB managing director K. Ashok Reddy directed officials to take special care while carrying out repairs, considering the age of the stone masonry structure. He stressed the need to follow quality standards and adopt permanent measures to prevent similar leakages in the future.
He instructed officials to arrange water tankers in areas facing disruption in drinking water supply and ensure that residents do not face inconvenience. Officials from the transmission and operations and maintenance wings were asked to coordinate and continuously monitor the supply situation.
The board clarified that the shutdown was restricted to the 20 MGD Gandipet conduit and would not affect supply from other sources. The city receives around 560 MGD of drinking water daily from various sources, including Krishna, Godavari and Singur-Manjeera, whose supplies will continue as usual.
