Hyderabad: A 24-year-old man underwent a complex tracheal resection and anastomosis surgery at Gandhi Hospital after developing severe breathing difficulty caused by subglottic tracheal stenosis, according to doctors.

The patient had been treated at a private hospital in August after consuming poison and undergoing an emergency tracheostomy. Although he was discharged in early September, he continued to suffer from shortness of breath. He later approached the pulmonology department at NIMS, where further evaluation confirmed subglottic stenosis. Balloon dilation was attempted, but doctors said his condition did not improve and surgery was advised.

Due to financial constraints, the patient sought treatment at Gandhi Hospital, where he was admitted, evaluated and prepared for surgery.

A multidisciplinary team then performed the tracheal resection and reconstruction. The team included specialists from cardiothoracic surgery, ENT, anaesthesia and critical care. Doctors said the patient’s airway had narrowed as a result of the earlier tracheostomy and prolonged intubation.

The surgery was completed successfully, and the patient is currently under close monitoring, said Dr G. Ravindra, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
