Hyderabad: The Mahatma Gandhi Digital Museum at Bapu Ghat, Langar Houz, renovated recently, was reopened on Friday after being closed during the Covid pandemic. The museum, which was first started in 2012, was India’s first permanent interactive museum on Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of “Peace, Truth and Ahimsa”, designed mainly to engage students and young people.

The renovated museum uses digital technology, photographs, films and interactive displays to explain Mahatma Gandhi’s life and ideas in a simple and engaging manner. The museum has also been updated with inputs from similar exhibitions held in different countries over the past decade.

The museum has a 78-foot-long and nine-foot-high collage featuring more than 400 photographs from Mahatma Gandhi’s life. QR codes on the wall allow visitors to scan and watch videos or access additional information. The interactive wall is described as one of the largest of its kind on the Father of the Nation.

A 28-minute film, ‘The Triumph and Tragedy of Mahatma Gandhi’, originally produced by 20th Century Fox and narrated by Walter Cronkite, renowned American journalist, is also screened at the museum. Another attraction is the “Memoria” table, which presents different stages of Mahatma Gandhi’s life, including his years as a lawyer, his return from South Africa in 1915 and his later years as a national leader.

The museum was conceived and curated by Gandhian thinker Birad Rajaram Yajnik. The renovated facility seeks to make Mahatma Gandhi’s message more relevant to young people growing up amid rapid technological change. The museum’s design and content were further developed based on experiences from its international exhibitions, making the revamped facility more interactive and globally informed.
