Gadwal: Dalit Youth’s House Demolished After Inter-Caste Marriage

Hyderabad:Relatives of a woman allegedly demolished the house of a Dalit community member using excavators after she married him in Hyderabad. The incident occurred in Repalle village of Gadwal mandal on Thursday evening.

According to police, family members and local residents, Rangamuni, a Dalit community member and car driver working in Hyderabad, had been in a relationship with Maheshwari, a woman from the Boya community. As their families opposed the relationship due to their different castes, the couple, both adults, married in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

After learning about the marriage, Maheshwari’s relatives allegedly arrived at Rangamuni’s house in Repalle on Thursday evening with a tractor and excavators and demolished the structure. No one was present at the house, Rangamuni’s parents had reportedly locked the house and gone out for daily wage work when the attack took place.

The incident created tension in the village. Locals alerted the police who reached the spot and began an inquiry. Those allegedly involved in the demolition reportedly fled after seeing the police. Gadwal police deployed additional personnel in the village to prevent any untoward incident and provided protection to Rangamuni’s family.

Gadwal DSP Mogilaiah said criminal cases would be registered based on the complaint from the victim’s family. He said attacks or destruction of property over an inter-caste marriage would not be tolerated. The DSP said those involved in attacks, social boycott or other offences in the name of caste would face action under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other relevant laws. He said a detailed inquiry would be conducted and those responsible would not be spared.
