Hyderabad:With fuel prices hiked for the fourth time in 10 days, transport operators and gig and platform workers expressed concern over the impact on their earnings. While gig and platform workers asked the government to roll back the price hike, truck operators demanded a uniform diesel price across the country

The state’s average daily consumption stands at 5,883 kilolitres (kl) of petrol and 7,348 kl of diesel. The latest revision, which is the steepest of all, is expected to raise transportation costs across sectors.

Parents of school and college students are worried about an imminent hike in bus fares ahead of the academic session beginning in June. Around 1,300 school and college buses are operated in Hyderabad and the surrounding areas. “The fuel is a base price for any travel. Once the fuel is increased automatically they travel cost increases,” said Akber Ali Khan of Metro Travels.

The fuel price hike would have a cascading effect on food prices.

“From salt to tamarind, from rice, dal to edible oils. Everything will go up as petrol and diesel prices go up. Hundreds of lorries come to this place, which are sent to the retail market. All the vehicles run on fuel. Any increase in transport which reflects on the product, ultimately paid by the consumer,” said Mohammed Riyaz Khan, a wholesale and retail kirana merchant at Begum Bazaar.
