Hyderabad:Students entering the University College of Engineering, Science and Technology for Hyderabad (UCESTH), JNTUH, were told on Monday that their time on campus must go beyond classroom learning.

“This is a temple of learning,” said guest of honour and JNTUH registrar Dr K. Venkateshwara Rao, urging freshers to make full use of the facilities and faculty expertise.

Vice-Chancellor Dr T. Kishen Kumar Reddy, addressing the students as the chief guest, reminded them that securing a seat at the college was the result of months of preparation.

He called on students to adapt to a model centred on concepts, laboratory practice, internships and technical writing. He added that they should not restrict themselves to placements but pursue entrepreneurship and research that addresses social needs.

Rector Dr K. Vijaya Kumar Reddy asked parents to stay engaged in their wards’ academic journey. UCESTH principal Dr G. V. Narasimha Reddy, vice-principal Dr A. Raghuram and CRC chairperson Dr V. Parvathi also attended. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by senior students.

Teachers' Maha Dharna on Aug. 23

Hyderabad:Teachers’ associations under the banner of the Upadhyaya Sanghala Porata Committee (USPC) have announced a state-wide dharna at Dharna Chowk here on August 23 to press their demand for resolution of long-pending issues in the education sector.

“Even after 20 months of this government, teachers’ and education-related problems remain unattended. The promises made in the manifesto are still on paper,” committee leaders said at a press meet on Monday.

They criticised the delay in filling vacancies and demanded sanction of district education officer posts in new districts, deputy education officer posts for revenue divisions and mandal education officer posts for new mandals. They pressed for unified service rules for teachers and immediate clearance of pensioners’ pending bills. Other demands included sanctioning 5,571 primary school headmaster posts and promotions for secondary grade teachers with DEd and BEd qualifications.

The committee also sought revised teacher adjustment guidelines, scrapping of lobbying-based deputations, changes in Gurukul timetables and resolution of issues in KGBVs, model schools, tribal welfare institutions and aided schools.

The committee noted that representations were submitted to the Chief Minister through mandal tahsildars in July and dharnas were staged at district headquarters on August 5, but there was no response. Leaders said the August 23 dharna was unavoidable.
