Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao

Hyderabad:Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Wednesday said farmers facing crop damage caused by monkeys should shift to growing oil palm.

Responding to concerns raised by several MLAs during Question Hour over crop damage caused by monkeys, the minister said by growing oil palm, farmers would find that monkey menace and attacks on crops by other wild animals will not be an issue as monkeys and other animals have no interest in oil palm.

Achampet Congress MLA Dr Ch. Vamshi Krishna saidsaid farmers in his constituency with parts of Nallamala forests in it, were facing severe problems with marauding monkeys raiding crops. He said this problem was particularly severe in Padara in Amrabad mandal.

Nagarjunasagar MLA Kunduru Jayaveer Reddy also said his constituency faces the monkey menace and urged the government to provide subsidies to farmers for erecting solar-powered electric fences to keep the animals away from fields.
