HYDERABAD: BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday said south Indian states had been witnessing slower population growth rates as they have adopted family planning methods more when compared to the rest of the country.

He was intervening during the discussion on the caste census in the Assembly when some members raised questioned the findings of the survey. He said that as per the 2011 Census, Telangana had a population of 3.5 crore which had risen to 3.7 crore.

He suggested that the number of people may not be to the expectation of those raising the questions as the rate of population growth in southern states was slower.

The Minister said the 2024 survey was the first such exercise in the country and there was never a caste census since 1931, when the first all India population survey was conducted. The exercise, he said, “was conducted sincerely and when there is no official data so far, where will incorrect numbers come from?”

“I thank our leader Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, BC survey committee chairman N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, and fellow ministers and leaders of all parties and those who lead various organisations working for BC welfare.”
