Hyderabad: In yet another case highlighting the growing menace of cyber fraud targeting senior citizens, Hyderabad cyber crime police registered a honey-trap case in which an octogenarian Ameerpet resident lost Rs 7.11 lakh through WhatsApp.

According to police, the victim began receiving calls and WhatsApp messages in early June from a woman identifying herself as Maya Rajput. She engaged him in friendly conversations and gradually developed an emotional bond. Over time, she manipulated him with claims of emergencies and financial needs, once even asking him to transfer money for urgent medical treatment. She later sought funds for property registration, release of mortgaged jewellery and purchase of household items, including furniture.

Police said the fraudster exploited the victim’s vulnerability and even tried to alienate him from his family. By the time he realised the deception, he had already transferred Rs 7,11,200 to different bank accounts. The case has raised fresh concerns about elderly individuals being vulnerable to manipulation.

Police issued a strong advisory urging citizens not to trust unknown callers, WhatsApp contacts, or friend requests from strangers. They cautioned against transferring money to unverified accounts and advised consulting family members before making financial decisions. Victims have been asked to dial 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. For emergency fraud reporting in Hyderabad, citizens may also call or WhatsApp 8712665171.
