Hyderabad: Universities are monitoring closely water supplies and asking hostel authorities to optimize consumption amid concerns over a possible shortage in the coming months due to the El Nino effect.

While universities have reported no immediate disruption in supply, officials and students said the situation would become clearer in the coming days.

At Osmania University, university official Radha Krishna said the available water was being adjusted to meet requirements.

Chief wardens had been instructed to take measures to optimize water consumption in view of the anticipated scarcity, he said, adding that the university was following instructions issued by the HMWS&SB.

A student, Ranjith, said there was no water shortage in the university's hostels so far.

The hostels were scheduled to reopen on Monday after the Dasara vacation, and the situation would become clearer once students returned, he said.

At Satavahana University in Karimnagar, an official said the campus was receiving water through Mission Bhagiratha.

The university would follow government instructions to address any potential shortage if the situation worsened, the official said.

Similarly, there have been no interruptions in water supply to the hostels at the University of Hyderabad, according to student Maloth Karteek.

Water was being supplied as usual, he said, adding that students would follow government instructions on judicious water use amid concerns over scarcity in the coming months.
