Hyderabad: The Telangana Election Commission (TEC) on Tuesday published the final electoral rolls for the forthcoming municipal elections, reporting 52.43 lakh electors in 2,996 wards across 117 municipalities and six municipal corporations. The stage is set for the issuance of the election notification, which is expected after January 20. Polling is likely to be held in the first half of February.

In parallel, the process of determining reservations for the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Backward Classes (BCs) community has begun, based on the recommendations of the Dedicated BC Commission. Sources said the commission has proposed 15.5 per cent reservations together for the SCs and STs communities and 34.5 per cent for the BCs communities,.

These recommendations are in line with GO 46 issued by the state government on November 22, 2025, which mandated that reservations for SCs, STs and BCs together should not exceed 50 per cent. The GO also stipulated that the 2011 Census data must be used for determining SC and ST quotas, while the SEEPC caste enumeration conducted in December 2024 should be the basis for BC reservations.

Sources added that the higher BC quota in urban local bodies was primarily due to the relatively lower population of SC and ST community members in urban areas compared to rural areas.

The Dedicated BC Commission submitted its report to the government on Tuesday, outlining ward-wise and chairperson seat reservations for BCs in municipalities and corporations. After accounting for SC and ST reservations within the 50 per cent ceiling, the remaining quota has been earmarked for BCs.

Based on this report, the municipal administration and urban development department is expected to finalise reservations for each municipality and Corporation within the next two days and forward the final details to TEC.

The TEC had published the draft electoral rolls on January 1 and invited objections and suggestions. With the final list released, the commission plans to publish the final list of polling stations along with photo voter rolls on January 16.

As municipal and corporation elections are held on party symbols, political activity has intensified across the state. Aspirants from major parties such as the ruling Congress and opposition BRS, BJP have started lobbying to secure B-forms to contest the elections.
