Hyderabad: A 40-year-old man died by suicide allegedly due to marital discord and stress following a legal notice served on him for divorce, at his residence in Ghatkesar on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Ghatkesar sub-inspector A Shekhar, the deceased, Gattupalli Venkatesh, a driver, had been out of work in recent months. Police said he had been married in 2019 and differences developed between the couple following his wife’s decision to move to her parental home due to her the ill-health of her mother, sanitation worker at a Gurukul hostel.

The couple later shifted to a rented house at Keesara and elders from both families attempted mediation. Police said the woman eventually sought a divorce.

Police said there had been no communication between the couple for some time. Two days before the incident, the woman reportedly sent a legal notice seeking divorce, citing harassment. “He got to understand the contents of the notice through neighbours. He was addicted to alcohol and abused his wife. He often said he would end his life after getting drunk,” the SI said.

Ghatkesar police said he was unable to cope with the situation and died by suicide on Tuesday, while his mother was gone to meet her relatives. Venkatesh’s body was shifted to the Gandhi mortuary for postmortem examination.
