HYDERABAD: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, reported 244 drug seizures and 217 convictions during its 2025 enforcement drive, marking one of its most intensive crackdowns in recent years.

Officials said 84 drugs were found to be not of standard quality (NSQ) in the market after analysing 4,801 samples. Action has been initiated against the manufacturers under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The DCA booked cases across multiple categories including six spurious drug rackets, 36 cases involving unlicensed medical shops, godowns and illegal stocking and 38 cases against quacks and unauthorised medical practitioners. The authorities also booked 140 cases for misleading advertisements, four cases of unlicensed drug manufacturing and nine cases of drugs illegally sold as food products/nutraceuticals besides two cases of price violations. The total value of drugs seized stood at ₹1.39 crore.

Spurious medicines detected included anti-cholesterol drugs, antihistamines and anti-epileptics, many falsely labelled as products of reputed pharmaceutical companies. Several consignments were traced to interstate networks, with four dealers arrested — the first such arrests by DCA Telangana.

In coordination with the Prohibition and Excise Department, the DCA also raided chemical and pharmaceutical units flagged by the Telangana Pollution Control Board. Inspections revealed unauthorised manufacture of synthetic psychostimulants intended for export.

Enforcement actions included stop-production orders, licence suspensions, product cancellations and warning letters, the department said.
