Hyderabad: The Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) has waived the ₹15,000 readmission fee for PG medicos rejoining medical colleges after maternity leave. The directions were issued by the university following a report 'Female PG medicos struggle to rejoin after maternity Leave' published in these columns on December 12, 2025.
Under the policy, all women postgraduate medical students are eligible for maternity leave as per prevailing government orders. The period of study will be extended equivalent to the duration of maternity leave availed.
The circular states that once a maternity leave request is received, the respective college principal must intimate KNRUHS for information, after which the leave will be sanctioned by the university. Principals and deans have been made responsible for ensuring timely reporting, documentation and communication with the university.
Dr Srinath, the president of Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association (TGSRDA), who brought the issue to light and said it is a relief. “All these while there was no clarity. Waiving off our readmission fee is a great relief,” a woman doctor said.
According to the instructions, other students who avail leave up to 90 days can be permitted to rejoin immediately upon reporting to the college, with approval from the principal or dean concerned.
For students whose leave exceeds 91 days, colleges must ensure submission of a formal readmission application, along with paying a readmission fee of ₹15,000.
