Cyber Cops Warn Of Festive Scams
Scammers are circulating fake mobile applications (APK files) and websites that mimic genuine e-commerce portals: Police
HYDERABAD: The city cybercrime police have urged citizens to stay alert during the Diwali season as cyber fraudsters are targeting shoppers through fake e-commerce sites, malicious apps, phishing links and social media ads offering huge discounts on gadgets and festive items. Officials said fraudsters are exploiting the festive rush to trick people into revealing banking credentials, credit card details, and personal data, causing major financial losses.
Police said scammers are circulating fake mobile applications (APK files) and websites that mimic genuine e-commerce portals. Once downloaded, these apps install malware that steals sensitive information. Fraudsters are also sending phishing links through WhatsApp, SMS and social media, posing as payment gateways or festive offer pages to collect OTPs and banking data.
Several victims have also received fake messages claiming they have won Diwali gifts or rewards, asking them to pay small “processing fees.” Others have been duped through fake social media ads that vanish once payments are made.
Advising the public, police said citizens should avoid downloading apps or clicking on links from unverified sources and shop only from trusted websites. They should not share banking details, respond to gift offers or make payments on unknown portals. People have been urged to enable two-factor authentication on banking and shopping accounts and to report cyber frauds immediately through the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 or at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
