CWC Showers Praise on Revanth for Caste Census
CWC hails Revanth Reddy’s caste census model in Telangana, urges Centre to adopt it for national rollout.
Hyderabad: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Friday commended the Telangana government and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for their efforts to conduct a scientifically rigorous and foolproof caste census in the state.
The CWC passed a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to adopt Telangana’s model as a template for the upcoming national caste census. Revanth Reddy, who presented the details of the Telangana caste census at the meeting, highlighted that the state government had undertaken the exercise following wide consultations with various sections of society. He explained that the caste census comprised 57 questions spread across eight pages, aimed at collecting comprehensive data from families across the state.
The resolution adopted by the CWC commended Telangana’s approach, describing it as an “effective and inclusive framework” for caste enumeration. The resolution stated, “The CWC believes that the model followed by Telangana provides an effective and inclusive framework that the Government of India must emulate.”
Revanth Reddy further shared that Telangana had divided the state into 95,000 units, with enumerators tasked with visiting 150 households each over a 60-day data collection period. For quality assurance, supervisors were appointed to oversee groups of ten enumerators, ensuring adherence to the prescribed methods. The state covered 96 per cent of its population in this exercise, with a toll-free number made available for families that were missed.
The Chief Minister highlighted the success of the project, stating, “We have created a robust policy document on the caste census without controversy, legal issues, or political interference. The Telangana model will benefit everyone.” He suggested that the Union government send a team of experts to study the state’s model, offering full support from Telangana for this initiative.
