HYDERABAD: A couple died in an accident involving a TGRTC bus near Teegalaguda in Moosarambagh on Thursday night while on their way to Tank Bund to celebrate the New Year. Police said the woman, Venkamma, was run over by the bus, while her husband Tirupathi Rao reportedly died of a heart attack after seeing her condition

The accident occurred on a narrow stretch of road, which had sewage water flowing on the side, no footpath and pedestrians walking on the road.

The victims, natives of AP and residents of Kothapet, had gone to Malakpet to visit their daughter. They then headed out to Tank Bund with her family, as well as Tirupathi’s son Ashok and daughter‑in‑law on three bikes. The accident occurred at about 9.15 pm.

According to the police, Tirupathi’s scooter and the bus were travelling in the same direction when the couple fell on the road. Preliminary findings suggest the scooter may have lost control at a speed breaker. Ashok alleged the bus was speeding and forced the scooter off balance while overtaking it.

“The bus was moving very fast and had already ‘jumped’ over speed breakers twice. While taking a turn, it squeezed the scooter to the left, causing them to lose balance and fall,” he said.

“My mother died on the spot. My father suffered a heart attack after seeing her condition and died before medical help could arrive,” Ashok stated in his complaint.

Eyewitnesses said the RTC driver fled but was later caught and taken into custody. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered. The bodies were shifted to Osmania Hospital for postmortem.

Inspector P. Naresh said the report would confirm whether Tirupathi suffered a heart attack, while Venkamma had clear head injuries. Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby shops to establish the sequence of events.

Residents complained of poor lighting, lack of footpaths, drainage problems and encroachments along the stretch, which they said worsened after the demolition of the Moosarambagh bridge.

Police said CCTV footage from the immediate area was unclear, and footage from nearby shops is being examined to ascertain the sequence of events. Footage from the spot showed the absence of a footpath along the road, with drainage water flowing on the side. As a result, pedestrians were compelled to walk on the road, further shrinking the space available for the two-wheeler.

“Both sides of the road are encroached by street vendors and abandoned vehicles. There is no divider, and speed breakers appear suddenly. Since the demolition of the Moosarambagh bridge, traffic congestion here has worsened. It takes us hours to travel a few metres,” said Nayeemuddin Mohammed, secretary of the Afzalnagar Colony Social Welfare Association, told Deccan Chronicle, adding that repeated complaints to authorities have been ignored.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the scooter may have lost control after hitting a speed breaker, causing the riders to fall, following which the rear tyre of the bus ran over them,” Malakpet sub-inspector J. Kiran Lal said.
