Hyderabad:When a woman was stranded and drenched near a waterlogged bus stand in Banjara Hills on Thursday night, a City Armed Reserve (CAR) head constable, while patrolling the area, noticed her and rushed to help through knee-deep water.

Visuals showed her visibly panic-stricken, but she was safely escorted home by the CAR team.

As floodwater surged onto city roads following two hours of intense rainfall, Hyderabad police hit the streets, wading through waist-deep water in several localities to manage traffic and help stranded commuters.

Over 3,000 traffic personnel were deployed across 160 waterlogging points within the city police commissionerate limits.

At Miyapur, nearly nine traffic officers worked for two hours to manage the chaos. “Roads were jam-packed, two-wheelers were getting stuck and our officers were helping them move while also managing diversions. It felt like wartime,” said Miyapur traffic inspector G. Prashanth.

In Kothur, waterlogging under the railway underpass towards Shadnagar was cleared by the traffic police in coordination with GHMC and HYDRAA. At Bollaram, a tree was uprooted and fell on a parked vehicle. Traffic police cleared the debris to restore movement. A similar incident near Koteshwar Temple at Hakimpet Y Junction was promptly handled.

Hyderabad police commissioner C.V. Anand commended the efforts of his force: “Having done this work for over three years as additional CP (traffic), I fully understand what it involves. Our cops were equipped with raincoats, boots and batons, and didn’t desert their junctions despite the downpour.”

DCP (traffic-I) B.K. Rahul Hegde added that senior officers closely monitored the ground situation. He personally oversaw operations at KCP Junction and instructed officials to assist vehicle riders and mark manholes to prevent mishaps.

Citizens also acknowledged the effort. “The traffic police were on the ground throughout, managing everything despite the flooding,” said Mohammed Azher from Santoshnagar. In Shaikpet, Chatrinaka, Dabeerpura, Tolichowki, Santoshnagar, Chilkalguda and other areas, traffic police were seen regulating flow and assisting with dewatering.

Even after peak hours, the work continued. A damaged patch on the Hitec City ROB flyover was fixed in the presence of a Madhapur traffic cop, while Sanathnagar police cleared debris near water outlets close to Food Corporation India premises.
