NIZAMABAD: The ruling Congress is conducting a serious review of the poor performance of its leaders in the recent gram panchayat elections in the Armoor and Balkonda Assembly constituencies of Nizamabad district.

Of the five Assembly constituencies in the district, Congress-backed candidates secured a majority of sarpanch posts in Nizamabad Rural, Bodhan and parts of the Banswada Assembly constituency. However, the party’s performance in Balkonda and Armoor has caused concern among the leadership.

In the Balkonda Assembly constituency, only 48 Congress-supported candidates were elected as sarpanches. In contrast, BRS candidates won 31-gram panchayats, BJP eight, and others 18. The outcome has surprised party leaders, particularly as the Congress high command had accorded significant importance to Balkonda by appointing several leaders from the constituency to state-level corporation chairman posts.

Former MLA Eravathri Anil, Manala Mohan Reddy and Anvesh Reddy were appointed as chairmen of state-level corporations from the Balkonda Assembly constituency. Former Congress MLA candidate Sunil Kumar also saw party-backed candidates win in his native village. Notably, compared to other constituencies, Balkonda has a higher number of district- and state-level Congress leaders.

In the Armoor Assembly constituency, 53 Congress-backed sarpanch candidates were elected, while the BJP was limited to 12-gram panchayats.

Meanwhile, District Congress Committee President K. Nagesh Reddy, city Congress president Bobbili Ramakrishna and other leaders met AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan in Hyderabad on Friday. Sources said they briefed her on the local political situation and the party’s performance in the panchayat polls.
