Congress Overcomes Urban Weakness in Hyderabad, Emerges As Single Largest Party

Hyderabad: The Congress appears to have overcome its weakness in Hyderabad in relation to the BRS and the BJP by emerging as the single largest party in municipal elections conducted in the periphery of Hyderabad.
Out of 126 wards spread out in six municipalities around Hyderabad, the Congress won 54 wards and the BRS 47. The BJP, which considered urban areas to be its forte, won merely 16. Independents won nine wards.
The Amangal municipality has 15 wards, Ibrahimpatnam 24, Shadnagar 28, Shankarpally 15, Moinabad 26, and Chevealla 18.
The Congress victory over the BRS in the city neighbourhood is significant in the wake of a battery of powerful BRS leaders like Sabitha Indra Reddy and Chamakura Malla Reddy coming from these areas. Most of the areas are presently headed by the BRS MLAs.
The Congress won 11 out of 18 wards in Chevella municipality, leaving four for the BRS and three for the BJP. In Shankarpally municipality, the Congress won 9 out of 15 wards, followed by the BRS four and Independents two.
In the Ibrahimpatnam municipality, however, the BRS won majority seats of 13 out of the 24 wards, followed by the Congress (8), BJP (2) and one independent candidate. In the Isnapur municipality, the BRS won 12 out of 26 wards, followed by Congress 10, BJP 4 and Independents four.
Since the BRS failed to get a majority on its own in both Ibrahimpatnam and Isnapur, the Congress could try to win the chairperson post with the help of independents or ex-offico members.
