Congress Candidate Creates History With Unanimous Win in Ramagundam, BJP Alleges Harassment
The historic outcome has been shadowed by allegations of political pressure
KARIMNAGAR: In a rare development in the political history of the Ramagundam Municipal Corporation, Congress candidate Madipalli Vijaya Mallesh was elected unopposed from the 1st division in Peddapalli district.
This is the first unanimous election in the erstwhile Karimnagar district. The outcome has become a major talking point, as elections in the region are usually marked by intense competition and sharp political rivalry.
Mallesh’s unopposed victory came after rival candidates voluntarily withdrew their nominations. Local supporters described the move as a recognition of his personal integrity and long record of public service. With no votes cast, the result has been seen as a rare precedent in local governance. Residents credit his focus on infrastructure development and accessibility to the poor for earning public trust.
People of the 1st division said Mallesh consistently prioritised basic amenities and acted as a link between the public and government authorities. Many residents observed that elections are not merely about defeating opponents but about winning people’s confidence, citing his support to the community during difficult times.
However, the historic outcome has been shadowed by allegations of political pressure. Following the withdrawal of nominations, BJP candidate Reema Biswas approached the Additional DCP and lodged a complaint, alleging that her withdrawal was forced. She claimed Congress leaders threatened her and that police officials warned of false cases against her husband if she continued in the race.
While some hail the unopposed election as a milestone for service-oriented politics in Ramagundam, the allegations have triggered a fresh political controversy. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the complaint.
