CMC Plans Converting Green Waste To Fuel

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) is exploring the setting up of a green waste-to-bio-briquette processing plant to convert tree-pruning and horticultural waste into an alternative industrial fuel.
Standing Committee of the municipal corporation has approved a proposal to take up the project through an expression of interest (EOI), with the civic body considering a public private partnership (PPP) model.
Additional Commissioner G. Venugopal Reddy said the proposal was still at a preliminary stage. “Nothing is finalised yet. We are doing a feasibility study,” he said. The proposed facility is intended to process tree-pruning waste, horticultural waste, avenue plantation residues and other green waste generated within CMC limits into bio-briquettes.
The initiative could help reduce the open dumping and burning of green waste, while putting the material to productive use. Bio-briquettes can be used as an alternative fuel in certain industrial applications.
Under the proposed PPP model, the CMC could provide suitable land and facilitate the supply of municipal green waste, while the private partner would be responsible for setting up and operating the plant, including providing machinery and manpower and marketing the finished bio-briquettes.
The project is also being considered as a circular-economy initiative, with possible revenue generation through the sale of bio-briquettes and carbon credits.
