Hyderabad, July 26: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy felicitated Hyderabad's Kargil war hero, Colonel Joy Dasgupta (retd) of the 18 Grenadiers.

The war veteran, now in his eighties, discussed with the Chief Minister, strategies and initiatives through which the state government could encourage more youth to join the armed forces.

Col. Dasgupta played a key role in the operation to capture Tololing Hill, a strategic location used by Pakistani forces during the Kargil conflict. The enemy’s control of the hill posed a serious threat, as it overlooked National Highway 1A, disrupting operational logistics across the entire theatre from Batalik to Turtuk and Kargil.

In response, the 18 Grenadiers were assigned the critical task of capturing Tololing. Under Col. Dasgupta’s leadership, the unit launched multi-pronged attacks and successfully took control of the hill.

A native of Hyderabad, Col. Dasgupta completed his intermediate education at Wesley College, graduated from Osmania University, and received military training at the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in May 1995 and led two Army companies during the Kargil operations. For his exceptional bravery and leadership, he was awarded the Sena Medal.
