Nalgonda: Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Sunday said that the previous BRS government failed to divert river water, which was going waste into the sea, through gravity.

He thanked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for sanctioning Rs 162.54 crore for the Munneru-Palair Link Canal, which was taken up to divert the flood water of Munneru to Palair reservoir through gravity.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a private programme held at Khammam, he said the previous BRS government had spent lakhs of crore rupees for irrigation projects, the land irrigated by them was minimal.

The Congress government, however, accorded priority to the irrigation projects, which would provide irrigation facilities to maximum area with minimum expenditure, he added.

He said the Munneru-Palair Link Canal will divert 10 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of flood water from Munneru to Palair reservoir, which would irrigate 2.45 lakh acres under the reservoir. It would also help in providing drinking water in Suryapet, Mahabubabad and Khammam district and to fill 10 irrigation tanks in the Dornakal assembly constituency. The works of the link canal would be completed within the stipulated period, he added.
