Nalgonda: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders and activists staged a dharna at district collectorates, including Suryapet, on Tuesday, demanding that the state government operate the Kannepally pump house to provide irrigation water to farmers during the ongoing kharif season.

Raising slogans in support of farmers, the protesters urged the government to release water through the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), alleging that the delay was affecting cultivation.

Addressing the protesters, BRS State secretary Y. Venkateshwarlu said drought-like conditions had developed due to the impact of El Niño, leading to deficient rainfall, falling groundwater levels and depleted water storage in irrigation projects. He said farmers who had spent thousands of rupees on cotton sowing were facing losses as the seeds had failed to germinate because of the lack of rainfall and irrigation.

Venkateshwarlu accused the Congress government of refusing to operate the Kannepally pump house for political reasons. He said the previous BRS government had ensured irrigation through the KLIS and alleged that the present government was reluctant to release water as it would give credit to the former regime.

Urging the government to rise above politics, he demanded immediate operation of the Kannepally pump house to provide irrigation water to ayacut farmers and protect crops during the monsoon season.
