Hyderabad: A BMW car driver introduced a technique of changing the registration number plate of his car with another number by pressing a button on the right hand side of the steering to avoid the traffic police from issuing a challan.

But the driver’s intention to deceive the police boomeranged with the alert traffic police identifying the trick during a weekend drunken driving check conducted on Road No. 1 in Jubilee Hills on Friday midnight.

Minutes after the car driver was caught for driving in an intoxicated condition at 12.30 am on Saturday, the driver identified as Goutham of Gandhinagar remained silent and stopped sharing his details.

As he was drunk, a police constable took the vehicle to park it properly and pave the way for other vehicles to move easily. As it was an automatic vehicle, the constable accidentally pressed a button on the ride side of the steering.

This eventually changed the number plate on the front side leaving the traffic police surprised. The car bore the registration number – DL 6 CM 7079 on the front side but on the back side it was TSFQ 9999.

The police checked the chassis and engine number and confirmed that the car’s actual number is DL 6 CM 7079. The police immediately seized the car and generated an e-challan for driving in an intoxicated condition. After checking him with a breathalyzer, Goutham’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level was 137.

“We lodged a complaint with the Jubilee Hills law and order police against Goutham for tampering with the number plate and technique he used for changing it,” Jubilee Hills Traffic Inspector N Ravinder told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday.

He further stated that Goutham refused to share his details in spite of repeatedly asking to furnish them prompting them to lodge a complaint with police for a detailed probe.
