Karimnagar: Backward class welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar criticised BJP leaders for trying to erase the legacy of national leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He accused them of weakening the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by changing its name and ignoring its historical significance.

Alleging that BJP leaders were glorifying Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, the minister called for protests in every village on Sunday, December 28. He said Congress workers should gather at Gandhi statues with photographs of Mahatma Gandhi to reaffirm their commitment to his ideals.
The minister, along with DCC president and MLA Medipally Satyam, Government Whip Aadi Srinivas, Manakondur MLA Kavvampalli Satyanarayana, MLC Balmuri Venkat and former minister T. Jeevan Reddy, participated in a felicitation ceremony for newly elected sarpanches at the DCC party office in Karimnagar on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, Prabhakar congratulated the winners of the gram panchayat elections and assured them of full support from the Congress and the government for village development. He reminded the sarpanches of their responsibilities, noting that villagers depend on them for access to government schemes and resolution of daily issues.
He urged them to prioritise preventing drinking water shortages during summer, improve sanitation, street lighting and tree plantation, and closely monitor government schools to ensure regular attendance by teachers and students.
The minister encouraged leaders to ensure that every child attends a government school instead of private institutions, assuring that the government would provide quality infrastructure and experienced teachers. He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had assured the release of pending village development funds and added that MLA funds would also be utilised to improve local infrastructure.
Calling for unity, Prabhakar urged party members to work together to strengthen the Congress in the district. He announced that a meeting would soon be held with leaders who lost the elections to ensure they remained engaged with the party, and asked elected representatives to stay active ahead of the upcoming MPTC, ZPTC and cooperative society elections.
