HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Friday announced that the 4,000 MW Yadadri Power Plant will be dedicated to the nation on January 15, marking a major milestone in Telangana’s power sector.

Speaking at a job appointment letter distribution programme for 500 land oustees at Praja Bhavan, Bhatti detailed the progress of the project and criticised the previous administration for inaction. He said the National Green Tribunal’s stay on environmental clearances in October 2022 stalled work for almost two years, imposing a heavy economic burden on citizens.

Since the Congress government assumed office in December 2023, fresh clearances were obtained after public consultations in February 2024. Weekly task calendars and accountability measures have since ensured steady progress, with two units of the plant already commissioned, he noted.

The Deputy CM added that the government is working on a dedicated railway line to supply coal to the plant. He also pledged to channel CSR funds into world-class schools, healthcare facilities, ambulance services, roads and flyovers to improve living conditions in surrounding villages.

Countering Opposition criticism, Bhatti declared, “Congress means current, current means Congress,” citing the party’s history of power sector initiatives, including importing Japanese technology in 1978, and its ongoing investments in hydel, thermal, solar and wind energy. He contrasted this with what he called the failure of the previous government’s Bhadradri sub-critical power unit project, asserting Telangana’s future as a national hub for green power.

He stressed that offering jobs to land losers at Yadadri was a humanitarian measure, not a mere technical formality. Under Revanth Reddy’s leadership, 500 families have now secured employment, which he said would improve their social and economic well-being while contributing to state development.

Bhatti also announced that the government is providing jobs to families of 159 TSGenco employees who died in service and will introduce a second round of compassionate appointments, unlike the earlier government’s single-time provision.
