Hyderabad: Interns at Bhaskar Medical College, affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), have allegedly been denied stipends mandated by state regulations. A complaint was filed on the matter with the National Medical Commission (NMC) by the parent of a 2018-batch intern.

According to the complaint, the college was paying ₹2,000 per month as stipend — against the ₹25,000 per month mandated by a government order (GO). This meagre sum was reportedly being collected from the students as part of their tuition fee.

In response, the NMC’s Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) issued a letter on February 11, directing the state directorate of medical education (DME) to investigate the matter and file a compliance report within seven days. With no response from the DME after more than a month, The board sent a reminder on March 3.

“The action taken report as called for has not yet been received, despite more than 15 days having lapsed. You are requested to expedite the matter and send a compliance report within seven days of receipt of this letter for taking necessary action,” read the NMC’s follow-up letter, signed by Sukh Lal Meena, director, UGMEB.

Advocate Pravitha Reddy, another parent who also filed a complaint, called the college’s practice a “grave violation” of state orders and NMC regulations. “It is disconcerting that despite the NMC’s clear directions, the DME has yet to take appropriate action,” she said.

She explained that the NMC guidelines required medical colleges to follow stipend norms as per the respective state government orders. “Any deviation is a violation of the NMC’s code and warrants stringent action. The GO clearly mandates ₹25,000 per month for medical interns in Telangana,” she added.

“This issue directly impacts student welfare and the integrity of medical education governance. It is imperative that it be addressed without further delay,” Reddy stressed.

Pravitha Reddy, in another letter to the NMC and the state health minister, has demanded immediate inquiry into the stipend payment practices at Bhaskar Medical College, enforcement of the GO stipulating ₹25,000 per month stipend to MBBS interns and strict action against the college management for non-compliance and exploitation of students.
