Hyderabad: Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) general secretary Dr Ravinuthala Shashidhar has appealed to Hyderabad residents to refer to Basheerbagh as “Sriram Chowk.”

In a video shared on social media, he urged the public to omit “Basheerbagh” from correspondence and postal addresses, replacing it with “Sriram Chowk” to honour the city’s heritage.

At Basheerbagh crossroads, a large statue of Lord Ram was installed as part of Dasara celebrations by temple authorities.

The BGUS appeal represents a cultural renaming campaign by the organisation, not an official municipal or state government notification.

Basheerbagh derived its name from the 19th-century Basheer Bagh Palace, constructed in 1880 by Paigah nobleman and former Hyderabad prime minister Asman Jah (Nawab Bashir-ud-Daula).

Though the palace was dismantled in the mid-20th century, the name continued to define the locality, which houses several national and state government offices.
