BC Leaders Thank Congress For Higher Quota
Congress leaders celebrate higher quota in all districts
Hyderabad: A delegation of Backward Classes (BC) leaders led by MP R. Krishnaiah met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday to express their gratitude to the Congress government for increasing the BC reservation in local bodies to 42 per cent. The delegation thanked the Chief Minister for approving an Ordinance to amend the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018 on Thursday.
Revanth Reddy reiterated to the BC leaders that the move was part of the 2023 Congress’ Assembly election campaign, which was spearheaded by AICC leader Rahul Gandhi.
Celebrations erupted across Telangana, particularly at Gandhi Bhavan, the state Congress headquarters, where party workers burst crackers and distributed sweets. Similar scenes were witnessed across districts as Congress cadres welcomed the decision as a win for social equity.
TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, calling it a historic step inspired by the vision of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
“Despite being from an upper-caste background, Revanth Reddy has taken bold steps for BC empowerment,” he said. Apart from Revanth Reddy, he also credited Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar for fulfilling the party's long-standing commitment.
Goud also criticised BRS MLC K. Kavitha for attempting to claim credit, dismissing her remarks as opportunistic. “After a decade of the BRS rule, the sudden concern for BCs is laughable,” he remarked.
Minister Prabhakar, speaking at Gandhi Bhavan, reaffirmed the Congress’ consistency, from the Kamareddy BC Declaration in 2023 to the enactment of the BC law. He also took a swipe at the BJP, accusing it of failing to support its own BC leaders and calling its promises hollow. He urged BJP leaders to support the bill and push for speedy approval at the Centre.
Criticising both the BRS and the BJP, he contrasted their internal divisions with the Congress’ unified stand for social justice. “Only the Congress has the ideological clarity and political will to stand with weaker sections,” he said, calling on caste-based and BC organisations to rally behind the party’s push for inclusive governance.
