Hyderabad: Union minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar is expected to play a key role in the phone-tapping investigation when he appears before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday. To depose as a crucial witness, the minister is likely to present significant information linking the illegal surveillance to the previous BRS government.

Ahead of his appearance, Sanjay conducted groundwork here, holding discussions with former senior police officers from both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These officials reportedly provided him with vital inputs to strengthen his case. Notably, senior officials from the home ministry have been in touch with state intelligence agencies over broader security concerns, including VIP protection and Maoist activity. The phone-tapping issue was also discussed during these interactions.

During the period of the surveillance, Sanjay was serving as BJP state president and leading padayatras across Telangana, where he openly criticised the BRS government. Intelligence inputs at the time indicated that he was a prime target, with phones belonging to him, his family, driver, staff and close aides allegedly being tapped.

Sources said the minister has acquired key technical evidence from central intelligence agencies, which he is expected to submit to the SIT. He is likely to demand a CBI inquiry into the full extent of the surveillance operation. The SIT is investigating the role of senior officials in the BRS government.

Former task force officer Radha Kishan Rao reportedly confessed that the orders for the surveillance came from top authorities, including former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and his son K.T. Rama Rao.

On Friday, Sanjay is scheduled to leave his residence in Banjara Hills in the morning and perform a special puja at the Hanuman temple near Khairatabad crossroads. He will then proceed to the SIT office at Lake View Guest House. A large group of BJP supporters is expected to accompany him from his residence to the temple in a show of solidarity.

Following the SIT inquiry, Sanjay is expected to address the media, where he may share details of his deposition and reiterate the demand for accountability in the surveillance case.
