The state government on Saturday stepped in to help the six-year-old girl who was pushed into the Hussainsagar on Thursday allegedly by her impoverished mother. The girl was rescued by an autorickshaw driver and admitted to the Gandhi Hospital, where she was previously undergoing treatment for a congenital intestinal disorder.

The girl will undergo her third-stage surgery at Gandhi Hospital in three months.

The mother, a domestic help, who had two children and had separated from her husband, told the police that she was not able to care for her ailing daughter. She has since been arrested. All names are being held back to avoid identifying the minor.

On Saturday, the Domalguda police shifted her to the Gandhi Hospital to be with her daughter. Domalaguda inspector Amjad Ali told Deccan Chronicle that the decision was taken from a humanitarian perspective.

Health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha directed hospital authorities to provide the girl with comprehensive treatment and arrange a suitable job for her mother within a week.

Gandhi Hospital superintendent Dr T. Usha Rani said the child was stable and had sustained only a few scratches during her ordeal. She had undergone two surgeries for her congenital intestinal condition, the first at Niloufer Hospital and the second at Gandhi Hospital. The third surgery is planned at Gandhi Hospital after three months.

The minister enquired about the girl's condition over the phone with Dr Usha Rani and sent officials from his office to meet the child and her family on Saturday. He directed the hospital to provide all necessary treatment.

After she sought employment assistance, the minister directed the hospital superintendent to arrange a job for the mother suited to her qualifications. Dr Usha Rani said the mother would be provided suitable employment within a week.
