Hyderabad:A 35-year-old man who consumed adulterated toddy in Kukatpally earlier this month died while undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims), on Thursday. This brings the total death toll in the case to 11. The victim was identified as Adepu Vijay Kumar, worked as a Rapido bike rider,

According to Kukatpally police, a complaint was lodged by his wife, Adepu Prasanna, 35, a resident of Indra Hills in Kukatpally, in which she mentioned that her husband had consumed adulterated toddy on the night of July 6. Shortly after returning home, he experienced severe vomiting and loose motions.

After waiting for recovery until the evening of July 7, the family shifted him to a private hospital in KPHB. His condition worsened, and he was later shifted to Gandhi Hospital on July 8, and subsequently to Nims, Panjagutta on July 9 for advanced treatment.

Vijay Kumar continued treatment at NIMS until he passed away at 1.23 am on July 24 (Thursday). The Kukatpally police have registered a case and shifted Vijay’s body to the Gandhi mortuary for postmortem examination. Further investigation into the incident is underway.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, hospital officials said that Vijay succumbed to sepsis and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) as a result of a renal failure. “He was critical from Day 1 and was undergoing several major therapies,” the official said.

This death also comes a week after the last death in the case was reported. Currently two patients are undergoing treatment at NIMS. Both are known to be stable and one among them is ready for discharge, officials said. Earlier, 33 patients were discharged from the hospital.

Excise officials continue their crackdown on spurious toddy, with one racket busted in Suryapet earlier this week. While all the seven accused involved in the case have been arrested, officials are examining the toddy samples in this case closely to draw a conclusion. Sources also said that the possibility of water contamination in the toddy has been ruled out, with alprazolam now being the main source of adulteration in the toddy.

Over 50 people had fallen ill after consuming spurious toddy in the beginning of July. The affected individuals were being treated at various hospitals across the city. Around 11 death-related cases were registered with the Kukatpally and KPHB police in this regard.
