Telangana: Amber Cheruvu Gets Clean-up Drive
Ranganath said that HYDRAA would fence the lake along the road to prevent further dumping.
Hyderabad: Pragathinagar’s 169-acre Amber Cheruvu could get a fresh lease on life, with HYDRAA beginning and operation to clear it of garbage. The lake has turned foul-smelling and polluted after being used as an illegal dumping ground for animal waste.
Residents of Pragathinagar and Nizampet stated that chicken, meat and fish sellers operating along the road abutting the road were dumping animal waste and remains into the waters.
HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath said that immediate action was being taken. On Monday, agency staff removed about 30 truckloads of garbage from the lake shore. Officials estimate that another 30 truckloads of debris may still need to be cleared. The clean-up work is expected to be completed within the next one or two days.
Ranganath said that HYDRAA would fence the lake along the road to prevent further dumping. “We will also try to shift the meat-selling shops to a nearby place, away from the roadside, with the involvement of local people and public associations,” he said.
HYDRAA has also increased surveillance in the area and booked cases against vehicles caught dumping waste illegally.
