Alumni urge OU to revive student union elections
Hyderabad: The push for the revival of student union elections was at the forefront as alumni of Osmania University (OU) from 1977 to 1988 urged the administration to restore this important democratic process.
During a meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram, the alumni expressed concern that the lack of student representation has weakened governance and campus engagement.
“Student union elections are essential for fostering leadership and giving students a voice in shaping the university’s future,” said Rajender, a former student union president. The alumni argued that reinstating elections would rejuvenate student participation and accountability on campus.
Beyond the call for elections, the alumni stressed the need for academic reforms and improved infrastructure. “OU must focus on academic excellence, faculty development and better facilities to ensure it remains a leading institution,” noted Prof. Vayunandan, a former vice-chancellor of Nasik University and an OU alumnus.
They argued that these measures are critical for OU to regain its stature and compete on the global stage.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Molugaram responded by acknowledging these concerns and outlined the ongoing efforts, including faculty recruitment and infrastructure development. “Your involvement is crucial, and we welcome your contributions to our development efforts,” he stated and the government’s supportive stance on these initiatives.
The meeting, coordinated by former Medak MLA Patlolla Shashidhar Reddy, saw nearly 50 former student leaders in attendance. The alumni shared memories of OU’s dynamic past and expressed their commitment to supporting its future growth.
“We are ready to give back and help OU thrive once again,” said Pradeep Reddy, another former student leader.
