Carrying flags and placards, the protesters raised slogans against alleged vote theft: Reports
HYDERABAD: Activists of the All-India Students’ Federation (AISF) and the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) were detained after attempting to storm Lok Bhavan at Somajiguda on Wednesday, demanding the scrapping of the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll and the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Carrying flags and placards, the protesters raised slogans against alleged vote theft and called for the protection of the Constitution and democracy. Their attempt to the breach barricades outside Lok Bhavan resulted in a scuffle with the police who arrested the protesters and took them to different police stations.
AISF state general secretary Putta Lakshman, along with AIYF state president Marri Sriman and state general secretary Nerlekanti Srikanth, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the CEC of undermining electoral transparency and the democratic process. They alleged that the SIR exercise was “part of a conspiracy to manipulate votes” and demanded Kumar’s impeachment.
Lakshman said the organisations would continue their agitation until Kumar was impeached. Sriman also criticised the government over unemployment and the conditions of farmers and workers, alleging that dissenting voices were being suppressed. He called for nationwide student and youth movements to defend the Constitution and democracy. Srikanth alleged that the BJP was resorting to unethical means to remain in power.
