HYDERABAD: Breastfeeding support should begin during pregnancy and continue through the postnatal period and after discharge, experts at AIIMS Bibinagar said during World Breastfeeding Week 2026 celebrations.

The institute observed the week from August 1 to 7 with poster and quiz competitions, lactation workshops, essay and poetry contests, video and radio programmes, and community outreach initiatives.

Executive director Prof. Dr Amita Aggarwal stressed that successful breastfeeding needs coordinated support from healthcare professionals across obstetrics, neonatology, paediatrics, community medicine, family medicine and nursing.

Experts said awareness must extend beyond mothers to families, communities, healthcare workers and students, creating an enabling environment for breastfeeding. The programme aimed to strengthen lactation management and encourage community participation.
