Adilabad: Adivasi leaders from Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra have accused the BJP-led Central government of trying to evict adivasis from their forests and habitats and of destroying their culture.
During a meeting held on Sunday, the leaders resolved to oppose what they described as anti-adivasi policies implemented by the Union government and pledged to launch a nationwide protest in the coming days. Leaders and activists from the Gondwana Gond Mahasabha and the Raj Gond Seva Samiti participated in the meeting.
Former Adilabad MP and Congress leader Soyam Bapu Rao was appointed as the Telangana state president of the Raj Gond Seva Samiti at the event.
Hemlal Markam, representing the Gondwana Gond Mahasabha of Chhattisgarh, alleged that the BJP government is forcibly evicting adivasis from their villages to hand over forest lands to industrialists for mining purposes. He also claimed that police forces are killing innocent adivasis in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh under the pretext of targeting Naxalites.
“It is unfortunate that the government is creating habitats for tigers while evicting adivasis from their traditional lands. Adivasis cannot survive without forests, there is no other place for them to live,” he said.
Another leader from Chhattisgarh, Ghanshyam Jharri, expressed concern that adivasis are being deprived of their constitutional rights, including access to land and natural resources, and alleged that they are being targeted by government agencies.
Speaking on the occasion, Soyam Bapu Rao said that after taking charge of the Raj Gond Seva Samiti, he observed a decline in the condition of adivasis across the country under the BJP’s rule. He stressed the need for adivasis to stand up against the Central government.
“The Raj Gond Seva Samiti will work in collaboration with the Congress to address the challenges faced by adivasis in Telangana. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has been very supportive of adivasi issues and is committed to resolving our problems. A notable example is GO No. 49, which has been put on hold in the interest of adivasis,” he added.
Khanapur MLA Vedma Bojju emphasised the importance of unity among the adivasi community to tackle their issues with the support of the state government. He urged adivasi organisations to coordinate with other Adivasi MLAs.
Former MLA Atram Sakku reiterated the state government’s commitment to the welfare and development of adivasi communities.
Durve Aryan, leader of the Gondwana Gond Mahasabha, also shared his views during the meeting.
Congress leaders Atram Suguna, Kandi Srinivas Reddy, Ade Gajender, Mallepula Narsaiah, Srikanth Reddy, Kumra Kotesh, and Raj Gond Seva Samiti leaders Sidam Arju and Mangam Vishwam, among others, were also present at the event.
