Hyderabad: Addiction to online betting followed by alcohol drinking habit forced three persons to commit theft at a businessman’s house in Apuroopa Colony in Jeedimetla, according to Cyberabad police here on Monday.

The police arrested the three persons in connection with the theft case. The arrested have been identified as Mohammad Asif, a milk vendor, Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Ameer. The police recovered Rs.2.15 lakh in cash, two mobile phones and a bike from the possession of the arrested persons, according to P. Naresh Reddy, ACP, Balanagar Division.

He said the arrested persons were habitual drinkers and addicted to online betting, which contributed to their involvement in the crime due to financial difficulties. The operation was carefully planned with assigned roles, Naresh Reddy said.

According to him, the police received complaint from Nelage Sangamesh on July 3 stating that he left home in the afternoon to visit his mother-in-law in Muthangi at Patancheru on July 2. His daughter called him around 11.30 pm to ask if he was returning home.

He told her to close the doors but not to lock them. When he returned at 1.15 am on July 3, he found his mother and daughter frightened. His daughter told him that she saw an unknown person leaving the house. It was then discovered that Rs.3.50 lakh and a mobile phone were missing from the house.

Based on his complaint, the police booked a case and took up investigation. While trying to dispose of a stolen mobile on Monday, the suspects were stopped at Shapurnagar crossroads during a vehicle checking. They failed to produce documents and were taken to the police station.

During interrogation, they confessed voluntarily to the crime. The police said Asif, a milk vendor, conspired with Mohammed Asif and Ameer to steal from his employer Sangamesh’s house in Apuroopa Colony. They were aware of the owner’s routine and took advantage when the house owner was away from the house.

The suspects used a bike without a number plate to reach the house. Mohammed Asif entered the house while Ameer kept a watch. They stole cash and a mobile phone but fled when the victim’s daughter noticed, the police said.
