Hyderabad: Addiction to online betting and alcohol consumption landed a junior chemist working in a leading lab in Hyderabad in trouble as the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested him on Monday on charges of committing two snatchings in trains.

Koruprolu Lavaraju (23) hailing from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh was working as a junior chemist at the leading private lab in Kazipally and was residing at Suraram. He developed the habit of consuming alcohol, smoking cigarettes apart from playing betting games online.

He used to play online cricket betting and games and spend Rs.23,000 salary on drinking alcohol and betting. As the money was insufficient for his lavish livelihood, Lavaraju decided to earn money easily by any means, Secunderabad Railway Deputy Superintendent of Police S. N Jawed said while speaking to media persons.

After arriving at Secunderabad railway station from his native place, Lavaraju observed heavy public rush and felt that committing thefts at the railway station and escaping would be easy. He then decided to commit thefts.

Accordingly, he committed a snatching offence in Simhapuri express train on February 26, 2025 and another in Gowthami express on August 2. Of the three gold chains he had stolen, Lavaraju sold two chains to unknown persons and spent the earnings on betting.

The remaining gold chain was pledged at a private finance company in Suraram branch in Hyderabad. The amount received was also spent on betting. While the efforts were in progress, the police apprehended him at Secunderabad railway station while moving, found under suspicious circumstances.

After being grilled, he admitted his guilt. The police recovered 77 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs.7.70 lakh.
