HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police on Wednesday conducted surprise drug tests on rowdy sheeters and suspected drug consumers at government hospitals across the city, with 87 persons testing positive during the drive, police said.

The tests were carried out by H-NEW and task force teams at Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital and the Government Hospital for Mental Health at Erragadda.

Police said a total of 204 persons were tested during the “Narco Tests” drive. At Gandhi Hospital, 41 persons were screened, of whom 12 tested positive. At Osmania General Hospital, 52 out of 90 persons tested positive, while at the Government Hospital for Mental Health in Erragadda, 23 out of 73 persons tested positive.

The drive was conducted on the instructions of Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar. Police said the tests targeted rowdy sheeters, trouble mongers and persons with a history of regular drug consumption in NDPS cases to create awareness about the legal consequences of drug abuse. Individuals who tested positive were counselled by psychiatrists on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need for rehabilitation. Police said legal cases would be registered against those found positive, as per law.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of DCP Task Force and H-NEW Vaibhav Raghunath Gaikwad and additional DCP Task Force Ande Srinivas in coordination with doctors at the three hospitals.

Police said the Hyderabad City Police Task Force and H-NEW would continue strict action against drug-related activities while promoting counselling and rehabilitation for affected individuals.
